CCTV footage has surfaced showing the moment a mob of around 100 people attacked a cinema audience at Wayfair in central Mumbai.
According to the police, around 60 people entered the cinema and surrounded the audience, who were then dragged away.
They then began pelting stones at the crowd.
The mob then moved towards the cinema’s entrance.
One person was killed and another injured, the police said.
The crowd reportedly tried to escape by running through a nearby forest.
The incident took place on Thursday night and a large crowd gathered at the cinema for the evening screening of The Lord of the Rings.
The cinema was open and running as usual, but a few minutes before the incident, around 10 people who were inside the cinema started singing at a volume too loud for the police to handle.
Police said that a group of around 50 people from the neighbourhood started the attack.
Some of the people who began singing shouted, “Shame, shame, shame,” and others chanted, “The cinema is closed, open.”
The crowd was also shouting slogans and throwing stones.
Some of the moviegoers started to flee, but the mob dragged them away and pelted stones at them.
A few of them managed to run into the nearby forest, where they managed to escape, police said, adding that they were later picked up by local people.
The police said that there was no security at the venue, and that the mob also attacked the neighbouring cinemas.
